Hours-and-minutes versus decimal hours
Payroll systems almost always want decimal hours, and that is where mistakes happen: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50, not 7.30. The conversion is minutes ÷ 60, so 45 minutes is 0.75 and 20 minutes is 0.33. Both formats are shown side by side precisely so nothing needs converting by hand.
Overnight shifts
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ran past midnight into the next day — a 22:00 to 06:00 shift is 8 hours, not −16. The note under the result tells you when this rule has kicked in, so a simple typo does not silently become a night shift.
Breaks and what counts as worked time
Unpaid meal breaks come out of the total; short rest breaks are normally paid and stay in. If you take two breaks, enter their combined minutes. Rules differ by country and contract — the calculator just does the arithmetic you tell it to.
