Reading a code you cannot point a phone at
Codes turn up in places a phone camera is no help: inside a PDF invoice, in an email, in a screenshot somebody sent you. Drop the image here and the pattern is decoded from the file.
It also decodes from a webcam, which is the quicker route when the code is on a physical object and the computer is what you are working on.
Look before you follow
A QR code is unreadable to a human, which is precisely why it is used to hide malicious links — stickers pasted over the codes on parking meters and restaurant tables are common enough to have a name. The destination is shown here as text, so you can read the domain before deciding.
Two things worth checking: does the domain match the business whose code this is, and is it a shortener hiding the real address? A payment page reached from a sticker deserves more suspicion than one you typed yourself.
When a code will not read
Blur is the usual cause — hold still, or use a sharper screenshot. Glare on a glossy surface breaks the contrast the decoder needs; tilt the code away from the light rather than towards it. A code cropped too tightly loses its quiet zone and becomes unreadable, and a partly covered code only survives if it was generated with enough error correction.

Can I scan a QR code from a picture rather than the camera?
Yes — drop in a screenshot, a photo or a page from a PDF you have exported as an image. That is the main reason to use a scanner on a computer at all.
Is it safe to scan an unknown code?
Scanning only decodes text; it does not open anything. The risk is in following what it says, which is why the destination is shown as plain text first. Treat an unexpected payment or login link the way you would treat one in an email.
Does my camera feed go anywhere?
No. The video stays in the page and the decoding happens on your machine. Nothing is recorded and nothing is transmitted; closing the tab ends it.
Why will it not read my code?
Most often blur, glare, or a crop that removed the pale margin around the pattern. A flat, evenly lit, uncropped image reads almost every time.
