Real characters, not formatting
These are distinct Unicode characters that happen to be drawn small — not a font size. That is why they survive being pasted into a bio or a chat where no formatting is allowed.
The catch is coverage. Superscript and subscript have a nearly complete set of digits and a patchy set of letters; small caps are missing several. Where a character does not exist it is left as-is, which is why some words come out half-converted.
The right use, and the wrong one
Superscript digits are genuinely useful in plain text: footnote markers, exponents, ordinals. Subscript digits write chemical formulae where no formatting exists — H₂O in a plain-text field.
Small text as a decorative style in a bio is legible to sighted readers and awkward for everyone else: search does not match it, and a screen reader may read the characters oddly or skip them.
Frequently asked questions
Why did only part of my text convert?
Unicode has no small version of some letters. Those are left unchanged rather than replaced with something wrong.
Will it work on Instagram or Discord?
Yes — they are ordinary characters, not formatting, so they survive any plain-text field.
Can people search for it?
No. The characters differ from the ordinary letters, so a search for the normal spelling will not match.
