What the ten bands cover
The sliders sit on the ISO octave series, each one double the frequency of the last. 31 and 62 Hz are sub-bass you feel more than hear. 125–250 Hz is body and warmth, and where recordings most often sound muddy. 500 Hz–2 kHz carries speech intelligibility. 4–8 kHz is presence and consonants. 16 kHz is air, and many people over forty cannot hear it at all.
The Podcast preset is the most generally useful: it cuts rumble below 125 Hz, lifts speech clarity, and pulls back the hiss region.
Cutting beats boosting
The instinct is to boost what you want more of. The better move is usually to cut what you want less of, then raise the overall level — boosting adds energy that eats headroom and pushes the signal towards clipping, while cutting never can.
If the warning appears, the export automatically scales the result back under full scale rather than letting it distort. That is why a heavily boosted file may come out quieter than you expected — the alternative was audible crackle.
This is destructive, and that is the point
Unlike an EQ in a music player, this writes the change into the file. That is what you want when the file is going somewhere you do not control — a podcast host, a video edit, someone else's phone. Keep the original: the change cannot be undone from the export.

Why does skipping a band at 0 dB matter?
Every filter in the chain introduces a little phase shift, even at zero gain. Bands left flat are omitted from the chain entirely, so an untouched frequency stays genuinely untouched.
