What is being measured
The top of your hearing range. A young ear responds to roughly 20 Hz through 20 kHz; the top end falls with age from the teens onwards, gradually and for everybody. Sixteen tones are played in turn from 125 Hz upwards and you answer one question about each, and the highest one you hear is the number at the end.
Fixed tones rather than a sweep, deliberately. A sweep tells you when the sound disappeared, which depends on how fast it swept and how quickly you reacted; a set of tones each answered yes or no gives a result that means the same thing when you do it again next month.
Why your headphones matter more than your ears
Most consumer headphones roll off sharply above 16 kHz, and laptop speakers produce almost nothing up there at all. A result that stops at 15 kHz may be telling you about the equipment rather than about you — which is the main reason an online hearing test is a curiosity rather than a diagnosis.
Room noise does the same at the other end. Traffic, a fan or a fridge easily masks a quiet 125 Hz tone, so a quiet room is worth more than expensive headphones here.
What the result does and does not mean
Losing the top of the range is normal and mostly harmless: almost no music has anything essential above 16 kHz. What matters clinically is hearing in the speech range, roughly 500 Hz to 4 kHz, and that is measured at controlled levels in a quiet booth with calibrated equipment — none of which a web page has.
So treat this as interesting rather than informative. If you are struggling to follow conversation, or one ear differs noticeably from the other, that is worth an audiologist regardless of what any website says.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need headphones?
Yes, for anything above about 10 kHz. Laptop and phone speakers barely reproduce those frequencies, so without headphones you are testing the speaker rather than your hearing.
I could not hear anything at all.
Check the volume and that the audio is going where you think it is. The tones start quiet and ramp up deliberately, so that a sudden click cannot be mistaken for hearing the tone.
What is a normal result?
Most people under 25 reach about 17 kHz, and most over 50 about 12 kHz. Losing the top is ordinary ageing rather than damage, and it affects almost nothing you listen to.
Is this a real hearing test?
No. A clinical test uses calibrated equipment at controlled levels in a quiet booth, and measures the speech range rather than the top end. This is a rough check of one thing, on whatever headphones you happen to own.
Does it use my microphone?
No. It only plays tones — nothing is recorded, no permission is asked for, and nothing is sent anywhere.
