Every maze has exactly one route

The mazes here are perfect mazes: no loops, no isolated sections, and exactly one path between any two points. That means there is always a solution and never a shortcut, which is what makes the difficulty predictable.

It also means the left-hand rule works — keep one hand on the wall and you will reach the exit eventually. Worth knowing, and worth not telling a child who is enjoying themselves.

Size against age

A 10x10 grid suits four to six year olds and takes a minute. 20x20 is a satisfying few minutes for older children. Beyond about 40x40 the passages become too narrow to draw a pencil line through on A4, so a larger maze wants larger paper rather than more cells.

Frequently asked questions

Is there always a solution?

Yes, and exactly one route. These are perfect mazes — no loops and no isolated areas.

What size suits a young child?

10x10 for four to six year olds, 20x20 for older children. Past 40x40 the passages get too narrow for a pencil on A4.

Can I print the solution?

Yes — on a separate sheet, so the maze can be handed out without it.
