Reading the level
Normal speech should move the meter well into the middle without reaching the top. Too quiet and the other end will strain; touching maximum means clipping, which is distortion no amount of processing removes.
If the meter barely moves, the system is probably using the wrong input — a laptop’s built-in microphone rather than the headset you plugged in. That is the single most common cause of "nobody can hear me".
Nothing is recorded
The level is computed from the live stream and discarded. Nothing is saved and nothing is transmitted — which is worth knowing given how many microphone test pages record and play back.
Your browser will show its recording indicator while the page has the microphone, and it disappears when you close the tab.
