Why MP4 is so much smaller
GIF stores every frame as a complete image with at most 256 colours. Video codecs store only what changed between frames and use the full colour range, which is why the same animation routinely drops from 8 MB to under 1 MB — while looking better.
Where MP4 works and GIF still wins
Social platforms, messengers and websites all handle MP4. GIF remains useful where autoplay-without-video is required, such as email signatures and some forum software.
