Aspect ratios by destination
9:16 vertical fills a phone screen and is what Reels, Shorts and TikTok expect. 1:1 square works in a feed either way up. 16:9 is standard landscape for YouTube and everything else.
Converting between them means either cropping — losing the sides or the top and bottom — or padding with bars. Cropping a landscape interview to vertical usually cuts somebody out of the shot, which is worth checking before exporting rather than after.
Making a video larger does not add detail
Upscaling interpolates between the pixels that exist. A 480p clip at 1080p is a larger, softer file with the same information in it, and the increased size is real while the improvement is not.
Where an upload genuinely requires a minimum resolution, upscaling is the answer. Where you want it to look better, it is not.
